Learn to Dive

Curious about scuba diving? You’re in the right place. At Ventura Dive & Sport, we guide you step-by-step—from your first questions all the way to earning your Open Water Diver certification so you can dive around the world.

Who Can Learn to Dive?

  • Minimum age: 10 years old (Junior certification options may apply)
  • Health & comfort in the water: You should be in generally good health and able to handle moderate activity
  • No experience required: If you’re brand new, we’ll teach you from the ground up

The Path From Curiosity to Certification

Most new divers follow the same progression. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Start with questions & scheduling
Visit or call the shop to choose the right course and dates. We’ll help you understand what gear is included, what you’ll need, and how to prepare.
  2. Online education (at your pace)
Complete the required eLearning/online knowledge development before your in-person sessions. This covers core concepts like dive planning, safety, equipment basics, and how to communicate underwater.
  3. In-class review & instructor guidance
You’ll meet with your instructor to review key topics, ask questions, and make sure you’re ready for in-water training.
  4. Pool sessions (confined water)
Practice essential skills in a controlled environment—mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy basics, and emergency procedures—until you’re comfortable and confident.
  5. Open-water dives
Complete multiple open-water training dives to demonstrate your skills in real conditions. This is where everything comes together—your instructor will coach you through each dive.
  6. Certification
Once you’ve completed the training requirements, you earn your Open Water Diver certification—your passport to join guided dives, book dive trips, and continue learning with advanced courses.
